5 bedrooms, 3 baths, sleeps nine, grand piano, books, paintings, toys
This ancient farmhouse with beamed ceilings, fire-places and terracotta floors has grown room by room over many generations of farming folk. It once housed some fifty people and their animals. The tower dates from as far back as Dante, when Guelf stalked Ghibelline in territorial wars along the nearby Tiber. Easily reached but secluded from asphalt roads, its rural character is intact in spite of microwave, central heating and Wi-Fi, There are nooks and books for quiet and solitude even during large family gatherings; a grand piano and a guitar for the musical. It is a little paradise for children who can cavort in three garden areas at different levels, these furnished with benches, outside tables, hammocks and a croquet set.

Charming Oasis We spent two fantastic weeks in july, first a week with our son (23 years) and three friends and then with a couple of our own friends. The boys played crocket, had a daily waterpolomatch in the swimminpool, cooked every evening and also spent, surprisingly enough, serious time to enjoy the cultural side of Umbrie. With our friends we visited of course many cultural, historical sites and enjoyed the pittoresk Tower House and our pleasant dinners in the garden. Lin and Carlos were great hosts and very helpful when our car broke down and had to be repaired in Todi. It was interesting to hear from the owners how they restored the property resulting in an extremely characterful house, with all the comfort needed surrounded by a large charming garden. We can highly recommend this lovely place
Unforgettable vacation spot My husband Dave and I spent a week in the farm house and fell in love with it and the owners Lin and Carlos. Gorgeous place, every room decorated with great taste, beautiful view of rolling hills and lots and lots of space. One could reach Orvietto, Todi, Spoleto by car in half an hr to an hour and Rome by train. We always tried to spend half a day at the house as it was as interesting as the above mentioned places. My favorite two activiities were lounging in the back yard staring at the view and hanging out with Lin and Carlos, drinking wine and having interesting conversation. We are already planning to go back with our children and grand children. We recommend this place for a relaxing vacation. Must have a car!
Nowhere in Italy we'd rather be We have just returned from our fourth visit to Torre la Cupa – this time with our family – and were delighted to find everything just as lovely as we remembered. Lin and Carlos made us feel at home immediately and had arranged for a delicious lasagna to be waiting for us. The younger members of the family had brought their walking boots and explored the countryside further afield, while we spent many peaceful hours reading by the swimming pool its beautiful woodland setting, and enjoying the magical views from the gardens across the valley. In past years we have visited places such as Orvieto, Spoleto, Assisi, Bevagna and Montefalco from here. We ate out at various local restaurants and in Todi - our favourite restaurant was Antica Osteria de la Valle - but our barbecues at the villa when we ate by candle-light under the olive trees were more fun! Another special memory is the walk we discovered, thanks to Lin, up to Acqualoreto along the lanes which take us deep into the Umbrian countryside. Lin and Carlos are incredibly helpful hosts and we look forward very much to visiting again next summer for a fifth visit.
Perfect The villa was perfect. Spacious gardens, fantastic pool, well equipped and stunning scenery. A great place to call home away from home for a week or more. Thanks to Lin and Carlos for their friendly hospitality and refreshing drinks. We highly recommend a visit.
Paradise regained. This was our second visit to Torre la Cupa and it was exactly as we had remembered: a perfect house in a perfect location. Umbria has no end of gorgeous towns to visit but be sure to leave yourselves enough time to luxuriate in the house and garden. Pure bliss! To top it all, Lin and Carlos are extremely welcoming, helpful hosts. In short, we highly recommend it.
A holiday home from home We’ve been back to Torre La Cupa every year since we had the pleasure of discovering it six years ago. Each stay has become a longer one, with more and more friends joining us to share in the delights of time spent here. These are numerous – fireflies dancing in the garden at night, under star-filled skies; spectacular sunsets; glorious gardens; fabulous views from each window and in every direction. That’s without long sunny hours by the pool, lounging in hammocks, eating outside at a beautiful stone table, walks through woods filled with blackberries for a drink at the nearby village of Acqualoreto, picking sun-warmed figs and plums from trees in the garden, or herbs for supper. But above and beyond that is the fact that Lin and Carlos are wonderful hosts, warm, generous, full of tips about the local area and helpful in everyway, ensuring that a delicious supper always awaits on arrival, treating the younger guests to a seemingly endless supply of ice-lollies and the grown-ups to drinks and fascinating anecdotes gathered over a lifetime of travelling. They have created a haven, filled with art from around the world and hundreds of books, and all that discover and share it feel very spoiled indeed. We’ve only been back a week and are longing for next year’s visit already.
Perfect for two families We were two families with four kids (5 to 11)), staying in the house for one week in July. We loved it!!! Both the house and the garden was better than expected and the owners really made us feel very welcome from the first moment. The house had a lot of "soul", was very spacious and beautifully furnished. The pool area was perfect with lots of sunbeds and large trees that provides shadow when needed. Lots of space for the kids to play, both in and around the pool and they loved the waterfall. The garden was huge, and made it possible for grandma to relax quietly with a book, while the kids was playing and making a lot of noise in another part of the garden. The lovely, large kichen and the outdoor barbecue made it enjoyable to cook and eat lots of good Italian food. We had such a great, relaxing time at the house that we ended up staying "at home" a lot more than planned. We did do a couple of daytrips though and recomend a trip to Todi, wich was lovely. We allso did some wonderfull early morning walks up the hill to the lovely, tiny willage of Acqualoreto. All in all this is a perfect place for relaxing with family and friends! Lots of thanks to our hosts for all the help in advance and during our stay, and for being such lovely company. We all hope we get the chance to come back. Marianne
An Idyllic family holiday Torre La Cupa is the most perfect place for a relaxing family holiday. Three generations of us spent an idyllic week in the most comfortable, characterful, well maintained and beautiful farmhouse we could have imagined. Our every need was catered for - from the lovely swimming pool in the immaculate gardens with spectacular views over the Umbrian hills, to spacious and well equipped kitchen, supremely comfortable bedrooms, BBQ, hammocks and much more. Lin and Carlos (who live at one end of the property, although you would never know it) were the most perfect hosts and nothing was too much trouble for them - from arranging restaurant bookings and local advice, to providing translation services when a visit to a hospital was required! Highly recommended.
fabulous! Magic!! the week we spent at the Tower House was the high point of an eighteen day trip to four locations in Italy with two grown "children," their spouses, and four "grands" ages 12 and 10. although every stop held its own appeal, this "home" offered everything: it was an easy drive to many enticing "must-sees," it was close to a major transportation hub (Orvieto) where one could easily and quickly pop off to further destinations, and it offered a wonderful variety of near-by restaurants with easily described epicurean delights. but its major attraction was the ability to enjoy simple family time in such a gorgeous and other-worldly environment. Lin was a delightful, fascinating and ever-helpful hostess who managed every query, concern and request with easy aplomb. One only wished one could enjoy her company after a stay. The home, the grounds, the furnishings, the books (oh, the books!!!) all presented constant delights. And of course, the big and little children enjoyed the pool and the ever-present potential for exploring the area. there is no down-side to my review. the only caution would be that one must have transportation, and be comfortable with driving along the somewhat less than superhighway - type roads common in the Umbrian terrain . But the challenges posed by "getting there" are more than made up for by the vast variety of ancient, modern, secular, religious, historical and simply gorgeous natural attractions in the area. would i recommend the Tower House? absolutely no question. my only regret is that i have not yet booked my next trip; but i guarantee, it's on my to - do list. And as to whether it was magic for everyone: i must not fail to relate that my twelve year old grandgirl has already announced that the Tower House will be her marriage location!
Peaceful Location, Beautiful Views We stayed in the house in the first week of June with our 5 week old baby and some friends. The jasmine covering the walls of this beautiful medieval farm house was in bloom and the sent drifted into our bedroom every morning. Just one of the many aspects why this house is a pleasure to stay in. The house is as lovely on the inside as it is on the outside. It is decorated with a lot of taste and detail. The owners have collected the furnishings over the years from all over the world and it feels as home. The house has lots of nooks and crannies, lots of little stairs, hallways and rooms of various sizes, making it easy too imagine you have not only travelled in distance, but also in time. The views from the gardens, which surround the house from all sides, are stunning and there is a lot of space in the house and grounds. For all times of the day there is another terrace where you can sit down to enjoy these surroundings. According to the owners the week we stayed was the first one with nice (normal ;-)) Umbrian weather. Fortunately to cool us off we could take a dip in the large and very pretty pool and lay in the sun beside the pool sipping on something refreshing. Absolute luxury! For those looking for a beautiful house with a true historic feel this is definitely the place to stay.
Idyllic holiday This is a truly wonderful place to stay, surrounded by stunning countryside. We loved the house itself - filled with books, comfortable furniture and full of character. Felt instantly at home! The gardens themselves are hard to describe. "Gorgeous" doesn't really do justice. We spent most of our days lounging by the pool or in the garden hammock. We also ate outside as there is a nice, large outside table, handy for the kitchen. Loads of room for kids to have fun and adults to find peace and quiet. We were two families and assorted friends, so it was just the right amount of space. Bedrooms felt luxurious, with amazing views of the hills and sky. There is a big piano in the living room. The village of Aqualoreto is nearby, and it has a little bar/cafe. Orvieto and Todi are just a short drive away; we visited both and fell in love with them. All in all, the perfect combination of culture, history and glorious relaxation by the pool!
Desires Fulfilled, Inspiration Fuelled Vacationing at la Cupa, in its authentic and sophisticated simplicity works on several levels to restore wellness and fulfillment. Everything you could possibly need while in one of Umbria's most genuine microsettlements of medieval origins, is in the house and in the nearby hamlet of Acqualoreto (home to a very interesting mix of friendly locals and charming expats: the stunningly functional pool (perfect for an improvised session of acquagym or wetyoga immersed in mediterranean nature!), the outdoor eating patios, the reading rooms, the grand piano, ect ect and last but not least, the central sandstone unique four-story tower which was used by some inspired guests as an outdoor climbing gym with an epic atmosphere. The listing description although accurate, barely captures the identity and feel of this place where we stayed with family and friends for a week in august. Extremely clean and well cared for, is a bit overwhelming at first due to the vast selection of the owners items which give the house a very distinct identity. And yet these items are also what made our stay very inspiring in every glance of the interiors and sorroundings. Lin and Carlos and their vast extended family are just great hosts and always provided solutions to the minor and largely forseeable domestic issues which arose. I would reccommend this property without any hesitation to all those looking to be inspired and fulfilled with La Cupa's sophisticated simplicity. C. Giambalvo
The most amazing home! Last summer my family and had the most amazing experience staying at Torre La Cupa! The pictures cannot possibly describe how beautiful this property is. The profusion of flowers, plants and trees and the tranquil buzzing of bees create a sense of separation from the rest of the world. The home is magnificent, and transports one back to medieval times, but with modern amenities! The comfort and seclusion made us long to simply stay put and enjoy, but the relative ease with which we traveled throughout Umbria and beyond, enhanced the magic of this place for our family. The owners were beyond kind and gracious. They helped us organize prepared meals, exposed us to the amazing town of Acqualoreto via a centuries old path from the backyard, and treated us like family. We made memories and friendships! Rarely in life are expectations greatly exceeded, but such was the case for us at this incredible place!
Unforgettable holiday in a beautiful house Catherine and I rented the Tower House for the whole of May 2016, having stayed there a few years previously for a week as the guests of friends, who themselves were on their second visit. Having once experienced the delights of the house, garden and the warm and unfailingly helpful hospitality of the owners, Lin and Carlos, you inevitably want to return. We hosted and entertained a procession of friends and family during the month, all of whom were enchanted by the house which is spacious, comfortable and full of beautiful art and artefacts, reflecting the taste, travels and interesting lives that Lin and Carlos have led. The Tower House and its splendid secluded garden have wonderful views of the surrounding hills and countryside. It is also ideally situated to explore the fascinating historic hill towns that make Umbria such a delightful destination. I recommend it wholeheartedly. Keith Parker, London
Stunning tower house steeped in history Nothing can quite describe how charming Lin and Carlos's property is. It is a truly extraordinary home, full of beautiful furniture, artefacts and art inside and surrounded by well kept gardens with plenty of different shaded areas for outdoor entertaining outside. The pool is stunning with a lovely waterfall, which kept my children entertained for hours on end. It really feels like a home from home, and is brilliantly equipped with everything you could possibly need. Lin and Carlos are extraordinarily welcoming and helpful, and their knowledge of the local area was very much welcomed; especially as we were there for the Acquaroleto festival, where Lin introduced us to the beauty and charm of the village, and enrolled my children for the painting class that was taking place. We have the fondest memories of our week at the Tower House, notably for the peace and tranquility that surrounds it, and the generous hospitality of our hosts.
